Southern Hospitality is Oh So Fine!

I can't figure out how to put more than 3 pictures on a post with this computer so you need to read a couple! Remember to enlarge pictures all you need to do is click on them.

This is called a "single house" - notice the front door which is not really a front door at all but leads to an open porch where you will find the "real door". These homes are everywhere in Charleston. What else I learned when we visited Fort Sumter National Monument (Park Service) - where the first cannon of the Civil War was fired - April 9, 1865 was the end of the Civil War and on April 14, 1865 Abe Lincoln was assassinated - he was trying to abolish slavery and this started the Civil War...that among other things.

Went for a long walk today along East Bay Street with views of the Copper River and Charleston Harbor - this is called "Rainbow Row" because the tall skinny houses are all painted in lovely colors.

Another beautiful home along East Bay Street - the three hour walk was worth every minute and we have lucked out once again with perfect weather, low 80s, sunny and not humid.

Now, some would say we have moved "down in scale" by dining here but I made reservations this fall for the "181 Palmer Campus" dining room which is part of Trident Technical College (area of town was a little sketchy), student run Culinary Institute program - we had a most wonderful lunch/dinner (they only serve at lunch) of 3 courses plus beverage for $15 per person. We both had beef tenderloin, Chicken Confit; Ross Goat Cheese Tart; Ross Lemon Mousse with Pistachio Cake, and a Warm Pear Tarte with Creme Fraiche - we were treated like royalty and the "teacher" also came out to speak to us. We could watch the whole student process on a large screen TV - a most interesting day. They were so professional and most will graduate soon - it will be a tough field to break into. Our waitress has two elementary age children and wants to be an event planner, hospitality management type person - hard field to break into in this economy. Best thing is we were almost positive there would be no problem with food-borne illness with watching this whole process in this sterile test kitchen.

What tomorrow? Boone Hall Plantation and the Citadel military academy parade - recommended if you like pomp and circumstance. Dinner at S.N.O.B - aka Slightly North of Broad - SOB (South of Broad) is the desirable area to live!!!!! hence the name. It has high ratings in my restaurant search sites...the "teacher" at the Institute also highly recommended it.

Y'all have a good tahm in South Carolahnahhhhh. The Southern hospitality is all that it has been cracked up to be.
