Sunday, Sept 23, Venice Italy

I got out my little journal and decided to clean up this blog and get the right dates and photos and stories in so today is actually October 5 and I'm working on September 23!   This is a walk around Venice day and since we walked 7 miles yesterday we have a goal!!
The main centre of Venice is San Marco also known as St. Mark's Square with other museums, palaces, and the beautiful Basilica of San Marco.  We visited Doge's Palace - so awesome.  The doge's were senior elected officials not necessarily royalty.  Kind of like the US President, Senators and our other elected officials and I wonder if they had the same drama and junk we have here when it is election time.
While we were figuring out how to get from the apartment to the train station when we need to head to Naples a guy offered to help us read the board by the dock.  It helped and then all of a sudden he is standing there with a stocking hat - hmmmm - so I donated and he did help us!
First night restaurant - good pizza!
Canals all over the place and many loaded with gondolas and it's expensive to ride in one so we just waved!
Also with all the narrow alleys and streets and canals it's very easy to get "turned around" and one night walking back from dinner to apartment I saw the same pink and purple striped slippers at least 3 times.  Yup - walking in circles.
Doge's Palace  beautiful ceiling - one of the most amazing I have ever seen.
This is a clock and it took us a while to figure out the 24 hour two handed system.  This was actually 11:30am (yes XXI for 11 and halfway around for 30 (half of 60)).
The Senate Chambers - not quite like ours!

How can you not love butts when they look so good.  This guy is bringing home a fish for dinner so that's a good thing!
Not sure what this one was dragging around but definitely not dinner.
And in the center of San Marco Square - heartbeat of Venice.
Google is good because after seeing this flag everywhere we determined it was the city flag of
Venice and it's beautiful.
Our Venice apartment "half bath" - definitely lesser than half as more than half had other stuff - washer/dryer combo, air cond/heat wall thing and something else we did not understand.  But guess what it worked well.
Dinner just around the corner from our apartment.  It later became known as the "buggy night" as we all got bug bites on our arms and legs.  Didn't buzz like mosquitoes but the bites were similar.
