Stories later! On the way home now! This is one of many facades of the new upcoming "5 World Trade Center". Lucy said I lived in this apartment and they were knocking on the door but I said I opened the window and told them to go away. Amazing facades - how do they do that?
A couple remaining heavy metal support beams from the original World Trade Center which had a North Tower and a South Tower and they were both hit by the hijacked airplanes. Everyone remembers where they were that day. I was at work early as usual and one of my workmates arrived about 9:30 or so and looked pale and scared and said she had just heard something horrible on the news. So since it was a hospital there were few TVs for employees but we could go in vacant patient rooms. What a sad day it was.And the 3 places where the planes crashed: NYC two planes, Pentagon in Washington DC and the last one in Shanksville PA because a brave Bloomington Minnesota guy Thomas E. Burnett Jr. was able to divert the plane but he lost his life as a hero leaving a wife and 3 young children.
Before 9/11:
September 11, 2001 - day of:1991 Jenny and niece Sara on our family trip - sitting in Battery Park NYC with a view of the original twin towers of the World Trade Center:
The lowest floor of the building and some of the original stuff was saved. The colorful tower is full of written memories. When we entered the 9/11 Memorial museum we downloaded an app onto our phones and granddaughters Rooke and Lucy wanted to rent the audio and they listened to every word on it. They are amazing girls to be so interested in history. It was the same at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
How true this is - we will never forget but our grandkids only hear the story which is a lot different than experiencing it. That is life!
This is a created quilt on the wall that has 3,000 plus faces of those who lost their lives from ages 2 1/2 to 95 years old.
A NYFD #93 ladder truck that was totally destroyed and melted.
This was a quote from one of the workmen who worked to clean up and find bodies and other things. There were a lot of displays of items found and it reminded me of seeing the Holocaust museums where they would have a display encased in glass of a whole bunch of eyeglasses and another with shoes and yet another with suitcases. I know that was much worse with millions of lost lives but a lost life is a lost life - painful no matter how it happens.
We saw a few young women with "and her unborn child" with their name.
Rooke and Lucy both wanted to do a name rubbing as a memory to take home so they found one that said Lucille Ann with another last name. The reflecting pool is under the names and I looked up and saw the reflections on the skyscraper and it was awesome too.
It was this person's birthday and the staff places a real live rose on the birthday of every one of the names on the panels surrounding the reflecting pool.We got the Subway down to a T and never messed up getting on or off at the right place.
Last night in NYC and I had gotten tickets for "The Beast" - a speedboat that assured you of bouncing, bumping and getting wet! We had tickets for the 5pm one which wasn't as crowded as the one before so Ross and I got the bumpy front row seats and Jenny, Rooke and Lucy chose the back row to get wetter - and they sure did get soaked!
Waiting for the Beast - and these 3 are awestruck by a bug - yes a bug and they all jumped when it flew away because they thought it was only a crawling bug.
This was the boat right before us and packed to the gills so we really lucked out. The pier 83 was a 5 minute walk from our apartment.
And the back seat girls:The boat passed by Lady Liberty and a few other places.
Very windy front row! I couldn't turn around to look back as I'm sure my glasses would have blown off. Ross took his off but my eyesight is terrible without my glasses!
And we made it back safe and sound. It does look like a beast with the fake teeth all over the front.
Last chance and 3rd night in a row to do the Splash pad at the Hudson River pier. How could we refuse and they got so wet we had to stop at the apartment to change before dinner.
We tried to get into a recommended Mexican restaurant across the street from this tiny one - no luck without reservations and I must say the food was really good and the girls got what must have been 24 ounce bottles of Pepsi. I have never seen those in a restaurant before. There were only about 8 tables and no soda fountain so it made sense.
We passed this every time we went back to our apartment and we still don't really know what it was supposed to be.
