First pictures were taken 3 days ago. This morning I have "spare time" for details and it is now Wednesday June 17 and heading home tomorrow!
National Air and Space Museum and Alex has my "previous" camera and is taking some good photos and he has an eye for photography. First class on board a plane in the 1950s - times have changed!
Smithsonian Castle in the background. The Smithsonian complex is huge and we have gone in at least 3 of the buildings. This is Alex and me in the Hirshorn Sculputure Garden which was on his checkoff list!

Of course continuing my tradition of Daily Ice Cream for Lunch on a Trip we had Coldstone Creamery. So far twice to Hagen Daz and once to Coldstone. Today 6/17 we saw that everything at Hagen Daz is 1/2 price in honor of a movie they are sponsoring - I will be seeing that! In Italy with Alex's "other Grandma" Kathy and the ladies' trip we searched out gelato every day also. It just feels right:)
I made reservations at a steak house not far from our hotel and noted that we were celebrating a 10 year old's birthday. Wow - window seat overlooking the Potomac and Reagan International Airport, kids' steak dinner, happy birthday and little stars in red, white and blue scattered on the table and the perfect ice cream dessert with happy birthday etched in chocolate. Alex ate all of his beef filet and part of mine.
This is Alex's photo of a statue in glass from Arlington. It looks real except for the eyes and I have never seen any quite like this. I kept staring and waiting for a blink. Now I wonder who it is modeled after.
US Capitol tour - Henry Mower Rice from Minnesota - Rice Street and Rice Park in St. Paul are named after him. He was a Statesman not a president.

Alex videotaped on the little camera the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and it was quite impressive.
The best part is missing in the sign - the favorite area of ours is "Foggy Bottom" and we are making jokes about it.
We were lucky to get tickets through our state Senator for both the White House and US Capitol. The US Capitol tours were led by kids from the office of the senator. We didn't see President Obama at the White house but he and his family were at home and we did see a Secret Service guy standing on the steps leading up to their private quarters.
7:30 am tour required us to be up and about by 6:45am but no problem with that.
Washington Monument and Alex says "it's leaning like the Tower of Pisa". It was taken with my phone as we could not take cameras, purses or much else into the White House. We needed our ID and got scanned twice and had to go through two security desks for the White House.
WWII Memorial and Alex found the Minnesota column.
So up at 6:45 for White House, then walked to Washington Monument, Reflecting Pool, Lincoln Memorial and finally the Vietnam Veterans wall where I had printed off the panel and line numbers for the two classmates from Red Lake Falls. Alex counted down 88 rows to find one of the names on a panel. And it was about 95 degrees and humid.
Ok - done writing - not going to edit. Going to breakfast and heading out for our last day here! and ice cream!!!!!!!!!!
