One more of the black church in Budir - beautiful inside and out. I'm so impressed with how Iceland cares for the land, buildings and people. Many weddings in this church every year locals and "destination" weddings. The church was built in 1703, rotted and then rebuilt in 1848 and the black tar is helping to preserve it. Iceland started out pagans and heathens, hanged to Catholic and was take over by Evangelical Lutherans centuries ago and in the 1500s the Lutherans chopped off the heads of the Catholis.
Inside of the beautiful little church they have ongoing services and beautiful colors.
Surnames in Iceland (not so much any more) had for girls the first name of the father followed by dottir (means daughter); sometimes mother's name is used; same for son - first name father followed by son. Trying to figure out how that would work in our extended family is a challenge! Maybe my last name would be LaVerndottir?????
We did take the long rocky walk up and down the long path and it was the only day we had a little drizzle rain - lucky!
Cafe stop where 2 local women serve the "marriage cake", coffee and tea freshly made and they were happy to see visitors back in Iceland as was everyone else - tourists bring in money.
This is called a blowhole and when bad weather hits a geyser shoots up from the water coming up underground from the sea and high waves. The guide said "don't step too close to the edge"👇
We thought about taking the walk to Hellnar but decided to follow our small group.
Iceland is definitely unique and this is a typical gas station out in the "boonies" as we would call it and Iceland is lightly populated!
I must say the buildings are so awesome, well taken care of and look very Scandinavian design.
